Preparing for the gig is in my opinion the most crucial part. I can spend hours selecting requested songs, and pairing them with songs I feel would work also. Understanding when something something should be played, as well as making sure there is something there for every one. All though this is very important, making sure my gear is accounted for and triple checked its vital for obvious reasons.
Usually the day before the gig I pull every thing out of its bag, and respected case from when it was packed at the end of the previous gig. The reason I do this is to make sure I did indeed collect 100% of my dj inventory. It is very easy to leave a power cable, or a microphone at a gig. This could create a big problem If I didn’t have a back up. Once every thing is accounted for, I then repack it all. This gives me complete confidence that I have all of my gear, and know where to get it when the time comes. Once I load every thing in the car I then (out loud) recite every thing I have for the world to here.
Wireless unit 1 Check, Wireless unit 2 check, Dj mixer 4 channel-check, 2 powered speakers-check, 3 speaker stands, check, 2 50 ft power cables check, 1 25 foot extension cable-check, 1 50 ft extension cable check, iPad check, lap top check, back up lap top check, built playlist on my phone as back up and iPad check, power conditioner check, Mac Charger 1 check, mac charger 2 check, mac charger in un opened box check, wired back up mic check, back up sound cables check, main sound cables check 2 LED lights check, batteries check, documents with formalities and particulars check. ” I am clear for take off”!
With a million things to think about leading up to the gig, this takes a lot of the pressure out of the equation, knowing I have exactly what I will, and physically seeing it. For me this allows me to clear my mind and think about the performance side of things.
